The Artificial Sun in a Box: How EUV Saved Moore’s Law & Built the AI Age

Microchips are essentially nanoscopic computing cities where billions of transistors act as the ones and zeros of our digital world.
For over 50 years, the industry followed Moore’s Law, doubling transistor density every two years, until progress hit a physical "brick wall" around 2015.
The light used to "print" these chips had a wavelength too large to create smaller features.
The solution was Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) Lithography, an "impossible" machine that is likely the most complex commercial product ever built.
1. Creating an Artificial Sun
EUV light has a wavelength of 13.5 nanometers, which does not occur naturally on Earth in a usable way.
To generate it, ASML's machine performs a feat of high-speed physics:
The Target: A molten tin droplet the size of a white blood cell is shot out at 250 kilometers per hour.
The Strike: A 20,000-watt laser hits 50,000 of these droplets every single second.
The Result: The tin is heated to 220,000 Kelvin—roughly 40 times hotter than the surface of the Sun—creating a plasma that releases EUV photons.
2. The Smoothest Mirrors in the Universe
Because EUV light is absorbed by almost everything, including glass and air, the machine must operate in a vacuum and use mirrors instead of lenses.
Atomic Smoothness: These mirrors are so flat that if you scaled one to the size of the Earth, the largest "bump" would be no thicker than a playing card.
Reflective Layers: They consist of dozens of alternating layers of molybdenum and silicon, designed to make light waves interfere constructively to maximize reflection.

3. Precision at the Atomic Scale
Printing an AI-capable chip requires stacking up to 100 layers with perfect alignment.
Overlay Accuracy: The machine aligns these layers within one nanometer, a precision of roughly five silicon atoms.
Pico-radian Control: The mirrors are controlled with such accuracy that if you shone a laser from Earth to a dime on the Moon, you could choose which side of the coin to hit.
High-Speed Movement: While maintaining this accuracy, parts of the machine accelerate at 20 Gs, over five times the force of a Formula 1 car.
4. Powering the AI Age
Without EUV, we could not manufacture the dense, energy-efficient chips required for modern Artificial Intelligence.
This technology was dismissed as a "fish story" for 30 years, yet it now allows us to build the hardware that makes the AI revolution possible.
